THE MARKETS OF PARIS

As you wander through any one of the Paris markets, the city suddenly exhudes an air of village life — there are no cars in the street, and people take the time to talk to each other again. It is an experience not to be missed!

A Little History

Paris markets trace back to around the 5th century. At that time, the city was called Lutetia and its first market — "Palu" — was located in the Île de la Cité district. From early on, the market-place provided an opportunity to exchange both merchandise and ideas.

While Palu eventually disappeared, other markets continued to blossom; by 1860, there were 51. With the re-opening of the Enfants Rouges, the oldest covered market in Paris, and with the creation of new markets keeping pace with changing consumer trends, the capital today features more than 90 markets of all shapes, sizes and specialities.

Your Market Day

Take your pick of 69 open-air markets or 13 covered markets, selling everything under the sun. You will find the highest quality products and merchants who exhibit a level of professionalism that is often handed down from father to son, mother to daughter.

Coster-mongers1, butchers, delicatessens, fishmongers, poulterers, dairywomen and florists all offer the freshest products available. On one day or another every week, there will be a market in every district (arrondissement) of Paris, bringing a flurry of life to the capital and its inhabitants.

1 cos·ter·mon·ger: n. (chiefly British) one who sells fruit, vegetables, fish, or other goods from a cart, barrow, or stand in the streets.

Good To Know

Covered markets are permanently open, whereas open-air markets operate only two or three mornings a week — generally from 7:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. For late risers, there are also the afternoon markets: the Saint-Honoré (1st district), Baudoyer (4th) and Bercy (12th) markets are open on Wednesdays, the Bourse market (2nd) on Tuesdays and Fridays, the Saint-Eustache-les-Halles (1st) on Thursdays, and the Anvers (9th) market on Fridays.

Specialized Markets

For 100% natural products, there are 3 organic markets (marchés biologiques): Raspail (6th, open Sun.); Batignolles (8th, Sat.); and Brancusi (14th, Sat.). The hours at all three are 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

To decorate your balcony or garden, be sure to visit the flower markets (marchés aux fleurs) at: place de la Madeleine (8th), Mon. - Sat., 8:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.; place des Ternes (17th), every day except Monday, 8:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.; the Marché de la Cité at place Louis Lépine and on the banks of the Seine nearby (4th), everyday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; the Marché aux Oiseaux (bird market) is held here on Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
