Free Wi-Fi at Columbus Cafes in Paris, France

Established in 1994, Columbus Café became the first French chain of espresso bars. After adopting a franchise business model in 2004, it now numbers more than fifty stores in France and abroad (Belgium and the Middle East). The company says they chose the name "in honor of the legendary navigator Christopher Columbus."

Columbus Café offers a warm and friendly atmosphere at all times of day, eat-in or take-out, with a wide choice of beverages (coffee, tea, fruit juice, smoothies...), sandwiches (baguettes, wraps , paninis), salads, and also desserts (muffins, cookies, cheesecake, pies).

Starting in January 2006, Columbus contracted with the global supplier Free-Hotspot, to provide customers at all of its stores with free Wi-Fi connections (accompanied by a retail purchase, of course). This set somewhat of a precedent at the time, since certain of its competitors were charging up to €4.50 per 30-minute session.

A Columbus Café table (the restaurants are often quite small) is a great place to quickly read one's mail or surf the web for 15 minutes.

Since Columbus Café's clientele are primarily students, offering a free Wi-Fi connection seems to be a huge competitive advantage. Kudos to Columbus for its innovative thinking in 2006!
