Polanski's gift for creating an atmosphere of mystery, dread,
escalating suspense, and uncertain fate is aptly displayed in
this thriller, shot entirely on location in Paris, France. An
American doctor (Ford) arrives in the City of Lights with his
wife (Buckley) for a medical convention. They check into a posh
hotel, and in a brilliantly directed scene, Ford takes a shower
and emerges to find that his wife has vanished. This mysterious
disappearance -- and a confusion between two identical pieces of
luggage -- leads Ford into an urban underworld where he forges
an alliance with a beautiful young woman (Seigner) who holds the
only clue to his wife's whereabouts.

Nigel and Fiona (Grant, Scott-Thomas) are a British couple celebrating
their seventh anniversary on board a Mediterranean cruise bound for
Istanbul. En route, they meet Oscar (Coyote), an expatriate American,
and his voluptuously sensual wife Mimi (Seigner), who Fiona discovers
passed out on the ladies room floor. After an unpleasant but titillating
encounter with Mimi at the bar, Nigel is aroused -- he wants to learn
more about her. But he's so gullible and ill-at-ease, he makes himself
easy prey for Oscar, who takes advantage of the man's vividly voyeuristic
imagination. The jaded American subjects the uptight Brit to torrid tales
about his sadomasochistic sex life with Mimi. Eventually, Nigel will
discover the truth about Oscar's tumultuous, conflicted marriage.

From Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide:
Corny, deliciously trashy tale. Often overwrought,
with laughable dialogue and not- to- be- believed
sex scenes. A guilty pleasure, to be sure. Polanski
also produced and co-scripted. Stockard Channing
appears unbilled as a literary agent.
